After taking a heavy beating during the first round of games, the Tunisians will go in search of redemption in the Mexican city of Monterrey on Saturday evening, when they’ll take on a Japan team that picked up a decent point last time out.

The Tunisians never really got going against a devastating Swedish offense. They were behind early doors, then they were two down not long after, and although they pulled one back, it wasn’t long before they were left behind by a far superior team. The Japanese played well against a strong Dutch team, twice coming from behind to wrestle a point, and they’ll now surely fancy themselves to go one better.

The Japanese are strongly fancied by the early market, but are they fancied a little too strongly? Looking at the early lines, the best option appears to be ‘Both Teams to Score’.

Tunisia - Japan: Form Analysis

Tunisia vs Japan picks - World Cup

Were there any positives for Herve Renard’s men to take from that opening-round defeat to Sweden? Well, they scored, so there’s that, but there certainly wasn’t anything positive about the way in which they went about their defensive work. They were second to pretty much every ball, while they offered very little resistance when the Swedes got close to goal. An improved effort will be needed here.

The Japanese did indeed deliver a positive effort against the Dutch, even if they fell behind twice, showing a slight lack of defensive cohesion. They certainly worked hard, though, while they have the players to create clear-cut scoring chances. Having scored twice, and avoided defeat, against what many would call the strongest team in the group, Samurai Blue should fancy their chances of picking up all three points here.

Tunisia & Japan Squad Analysis

Realistically, Tunisia boss Herve Renard should be making at least a few changes here. After such a heavy defeat, the fans will demand that much at least. Lively forward Elias Achouri has solid experience as a creator in Europe and his skills could be put to good use as the Tunisians look for more offensive punch. Celtic forward Sebastian Tounekti is another player likely to come into the starting XI.

All in all, Hajime Moriyasu would’ve been happy with the way his starting XI performed against the Dutch, and as a result, he probably won’t make too many changes, if any. Takefusa Kubo went off after 57 minutes last time out, and is now a doubt for this game. One potential change could involve Junya Ito entering the lineup after a very positive effort as a substitute against the Netherlands.

Our Tunisia vs Japan Prediction

From a betting point of view, ‘Both Teams to Score’ does make plenty of appeal at odds of +125, which looks slightly generous. The Tunisians, for all their defensive errors, did create a few chances against Sweden and they did score, so while they may struggle to contain a tricky Japanese offense, they could make headway at the other end. After all, Samurai Blue did concede twice last time out.

Japan to Win

Odds -189
Those looking to keep it as simple as possible, or if you're looking for something juicy to go in parlay should consider betting on the draw. We've seen plenty of games, even when one team was heavily favored, finish all square at this tournament already, while the Tunisians will surely be making a big effort to avoid taking another battering. The Japanese are strong, but they're strongest in posession and very rarely win big games by wide margins. A tie also would not be the worst result for the Japanese given the new format.
