After reaching the pinnacle of MLS in 2023, when they won the championship, the Columbus Crew were eliminated in the Round of 16 of the MLS playoffs in both 2024 and 2025. In 2026, this marked the departure of head coach Wilfred Nancy and the arrival of Henrik Rydstrom. Furthermore, the team's structure underwent considerable changes, and even their stadium was renamed. This period is also the first season without one of the club's all-time greats, Darlington Nagbe. Columbus may be taking too long to adjust to these changes, as they have failed to win in four matches and have yet to score their first goal at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field after a narrow defeat to Nashville.

Fortunately for Columbus, they are up against Toronto FC, a once-successful MLS team that has been mired in a slump in recent years.
