Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will attempt to move closer to the title as he dukes it out with the strong-headed Tommy Paul of the United States in the quarterfinals of the 2025 French Open.
Alcaraz’s bid to become the first man to win the Roland Garros title for two consecutive years since Rafael Nadal remains alive and kicking as the Spaniard punched his ticket to the last 8 with a 7-6(8) 6-3 4-6 6-4 win over Ben Shelton. For a third time in this tourney, Alcaraz denied his opponent from forcing a deciding set as he pressed the action on Shelton in the fourth set.
Nursing an abdomen injury and coming off two consecutive five-set matches, Paul powered through the pain and exhaustion to carve out a dominant 6-3 6-3 6-3 win over Alexei Popyrin of Australia. Paul displayed terrific tennis throughout his round-of-16 duel with Popyrin, and for the first time, never looked bothered by his injury at all as he racked up 37 first-serve points, whipped up 25 points more off the second serves, and broke his Aussie foe 5 times in a noteworthy display of resilience and excellence.
