Saturday will feature another Monterrey derby. In early March, Monterrey's demanding board and fans finally parted ways with Domenec Torrent; the Catalan manager never fully implemented his vision. After the goalless home defeat against Cruz Azul, Monterrey brought in Nico Sánchez, who is renowned for leading the team to the 2019 Concacaf Champions League title. In his first match, the team responded with a 4-0 thrashing of Querétaro, led by Luca Orellano, who scored two goals and provided two assists.
Of course, Monterrey has spent as much as, or even more than, the heavyweights of Mexican football. Nico Sánchez himself acknowledged upon his arrival that Monterrey's level is not far behind those at the top. He noted that, given the nature of the tournament, Monterrey still has a decent chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Once they're in there, things can change.
Sánchez is preparing for his match against Tigres and said he wants his players to enjoy the game without becoming passive. Tigres, the last Mexican runner-up, will be the favorite in the betting odds before the match.
