The Texas A&M Aggies (22-11) will take on the Houston Cougars (29-6) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament today at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, OK. Game time is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. EST, and the game will be broadcast on TNT.
Texas A&M is coming off an upset win over Saint Mary’s in the first round, 63-50, a game they were pretty much in control of throughout. The Aggies did a lot of the things they do well in that game (and will need to do against Houston). They used their physical nature and size to dominate the paint (28-12) and committed just ten fouls to Saint Mary’s 18, which gave A&M an edge at the free-throw line (9-13 compared to 4-11). Other significant statistical differences included assists (15-8) and steals (12 to 5).
As for Houston, in their first-round matchup vs. Idaho, it was business as usual. The Cougars' defense dominated the Vandals, holding them to 29% shooting from the floor and only 20% from 3-point range. Houston had Idaho double at the half, 48-24, and cruised to a 78-47 victory after dominating in the paint (36-16) and on the boards (47 to 32).

Houston has been one of the best teams in the country, so it makes sense that they are significant favorites in this game. However, it is not a great matchup for them. Like Houston, the Aggies prefer to play a physical style of game, and they are very good at what they do (which takes away a big edge Houston has over many teams). The Cougars tend to foul a lot (18 per game), but as 73.6% free-throw shooters, the Aggies may not take full advantage of it. But if Texas A&M can get Houston’s bigs into early foul trouble, they can take away the Cougars’ size advantage.
Texas A&M’s lack of offensive efficiency is what could/will do them in against an ultra-efficient team like Houston. However, much like the 2023-24 matchup, in which the Cougars were 8.5-point favorites, the Aggies will make a game of it.
