With the victory, Fritz has improved his 2025 grass-court record to 11-1, emerging as a darkhorse contender for the title.

Meanwhile, Thompson punched it through to the round of 16 with a win over Luciano Darderi of Italy 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-3. Thompson took a similar path with his upcoming opponent, Fritz. The Aussie also survived two five-set matches with Vit Kopriva 3-6 4-6 6-3 7-6(1) 6-1 and Benjamin Bonzi 7-5 6-7(2) 4-6 6-2 6-4 before gutting out a four-set win over Darderi. The victory sent Thompson to the round-of-16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the third time. He also made it to the fourth round at the US Open twice in 2020 and 2024.
