Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan will lock horns with former Wimbledon Open semifinalist Tatjana Maria of Germany in the quarterfinal of the 2025 HSBC Championship.
Rybakina earned her 34th win on grass on Thursday after topping Heather Watson of Great Britain 6-4 6-2 in the second round. Rybakina imposed her superiority from the get-go, scoring 32 points off her first serves and holding 100 percent of her serves, on top of 3 breakpoints.
Maria pulled off another upset in the second round, outlasting Karolina Muchova 6-7(3) 7-5 6-1 to push her win streak to four matches. Maria raised up her level of play starting in the second set after dropping the first frame via tiebreaker. The 37-year-old veteran corralled 37 points off her first serves and won 7 breakpoints, including 3 in the deciding set. Maria had also defeated former top-20 Leylah Fernandez 7-6(4) 6-2 in the first round and Arina Radionova 6-2, 6-2 in the qualification final.
