The Athletics failed to extend their winning streak to three games after bowing to the Rays 4-7 in Game 1. The A’s shot themselves in the foot by letting the Rays storm to a 4-0 lead at the end of the 4th inning. Outfielder Tyler Soderstorm tried to rally his team back with a three-run blast that pulled the Athletics within two runs, but Brandon Lowe’s sacrifice fly in the 8th inning sealed the win for the home team.
The Athletics dropped to 53-68 in the season, while the Rays snapped their three-game skid and improved their slate to 58-62 – fourth in the AL East.
