The best team in the American League, the Detroit Tigers, with a 57-34 record, won another series over the weekend against the Guardians, sweeping them in Cleveland in another display of superiority. Once again, the Tigers showed their ability to close out games. Against the Guards, they won the first game of the series 2-1, the second 1-0, and 7-2 in extra innings in Sunday's game. The game went to extra innings and was won by Sweeney's home run, Greene's 22nd of the season.
An anticipated series against the Tigers then awaits when they host the Rays in Monday's opener. No starters had been announced for either side as of Sunday night.
49-41 is the Rays' season record, but they lost series against the Athletics and the struggling Twins in Minnesota, missing the opportunity to benefit from the Yankees' losing streak.
