The Reds will host the Tampa Bay Rays at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati this weekend for a three-game series. Game One of this interleague matchup will get underway tonight at 7:10 p.m. EST. Both teams come into this game with 53-50 records. Tampa Bay is 1.5 games back in the wild card race, and Cincinnati is two games back. With so many games remaining, it’s too soon to call it a must-win situation for either. But at this stage of the season, every win matters.
Tampa Bay is scheduled to start Zach Littell. Littell is 8-7 in 20 starts with a 3.53 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and .252 OBA. IN ten road starts, he has gone 6-3 with a 3.68 ERA and a .243 OBA. He has given up just five earned runs across his last three road starts. Cincinnati is going with Nick Martinez. Martinez has gone 8-9 in 22 appearances with a 4.73 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a .262 OBA. He has gone 5-4 at home in 11 starts with a 4.68 ERA and a .225 OBA. Martinez gave up two runs in his last home start (July 13), but gave up ten in the one prior to that.

Both teams have been scoring runs lately; 34 for Tampa Bay in their last six games and 29 for Cincinnati. So, with both teams hitting reasonably well, I’ve got to look at pitching. Littell has been great on the road in his last few starts. Martinez is capable but too inconsistent to count on. His last two home starts are a great example (two runs and ten runs).
