The home second leg against Bodø Glimt brings with it an insurmountable challenge for the Austrian club. Going down 5-0 at home in Norway during the first leg of the Champions League playoff, Sturm Graz finds itself with an aggregate result safely within Bodø Glimt's control, and needing some sort of miraculous outcome at home.
Sturm Graz had been in decent form prior to that night – they are among the top teams in Austria’s Bundesliga – but the trip to Bodø exposed defensive frailties and a lack of answers to the Norwegian club’s high-powered attack. As they return to Graz for the home leg, Sturm will be playing for pride as much as for progression. It’s rare to overturn a five-goal deficit in European competition, so realistically the Austrian outfit will aim to restore some respectability and give their supporters something to cheer about.
At the same time, Bodø Glimt walk into the return leg full of confidence. The Norwegian champions are performing excellently domestically and took that into Europe with them. Their first leg 5-0 was a masterclass in effective offense and inside play – they pressed hard and finished in bunches to make the tie out of reach. Sturm Graz will hope that some of their standout performers step up to at least win the second leg. Georgian playmaker Otar Kiteishvili is one of Sturm’s creative engines; if anyone can unlock Bodø’s defense with a moment of skill, it might be him. Additionally, midfielder Alexander Prass and the rest of Sturm’s young core will try to rebound from the first-leg disappointment by displaying the quality that got them this far in the competition.
Bodø Glimt’s squad, on the other hand, has several players who shone brightly in the first encounter. Veteran forward Amahl Pellegrino has been a consistent scoring threat in Europe, exemplifying his knack for finishing (he was among the goals in the rout).
