The Cardinals may be starting to fade at the most critical point of their season; they lost Saturday to the Blue Jays, extending their losing streak to eight in their last 10 games. St. Louis has also lost eight straight to Toronto.
For Saturday's game, the Cardinals called up Quinn Mathews from Triple-A to make his MLB debut. He pitched over five innings in his debut outing, allowing only two runs, but lacked offensive support from his team. For the Jays, Kirk contributed a two-run single and drew two walks, while Springer added an RBI double.
Even so, it looks like an uphill battle for the reigning AL champions to make the playoffs; in fact, rumors suggest they've taken on the role of sellers. Springer himself may be on his way out of the team, and Gausman could be making one last start. For the Jays' game on the second day of August, veteran Max Scherzer will start, and Toronto is a slight favorite at -115 in the betting odds.
