As part of Matchday 2 of Group H in the 2026 World Cup, Spain and Saudi Arabia will face off this Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Considered one of the top favorites for this World Cup, La Roja has been more disappointing than ever in its opening match. The team coached by Luis de la Fuente couldn’t find a way to break through Cape Verde’s defense and had to settle for a scoreless draw (0-0). They’re expected to bounce back in style as the weekend comes to a close.
Saudi Arabia, however, will be a team to take very seriously. The Green Falcons pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the first day of the group stage. They managed to earn a draw against Federico Valverde’s Uruguay (1-1). They therefore remain in a strong position to advance to the Round of 16. However, the task ahead may be far too daunting for Georgios Donis’s men this Sunday. They will likely have to wait until their final match against Cape Verde to keep their hopes of advancing in the World Cup alive.

Spain - Saudi Arabia: Form Analysis

Who could have predicted that Spain would be held to a draw in its World Cup opener? Considered one of the top favorites to win the title in a few weeks, the reigning European champion was held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in its Group H opener.
Despite clearly dominating possession (74%) and registering nearly 27 shots on goal during the match, La Roja came up against a Cape Verdean goalkeeper at the top of his game. There’s no cause for concern yet for the team coached by Luis de la Fuente. However, a strong response is expected as early as Matchday 2. It would not be surprising to see them raise their level of play considerably.
Spain must bounce back after its disappointing start to this World Cup.
Saudi Arabia is hoping for another upset at the 2026 World Cup. Despite just one win in their five warm-up matches, the Green Falcons made a big splash in their Group H opener. They managed to hold Uruguay to a 1-1 draw! It must be said that Georgios Donis’s men came out firing on all cylinders in this matchup.
They played an excellent first half and managed to open the scoring just before halftime. The second half, however, proved more challenging, as La Celeste came out with much greater determination. After conceding the equalizer in the 80th minute, Saudi Arabia still managed to hold on to the draw in a nail-biter.

Spain & Saudi Arabia Squad Analysis
In their debut match of the 2026 World Cup, Spain’s defense faced little trouble. Unai Simon had virtually nothing to do in goal, as did Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi in the center of the defense. At left back, Marc Cucurella gave it his all. He repeatedly made runs behind the Cape Verdean defense, though without much success.
In midfield, Pedri once again delivered a very solid performance in the center of the park. In addition to completing nearly every pass, he won a good number of duels. Rodri wasn’t quite as reliable alongside him. Up front, Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres were disappointing. On the bright side, Lamine Yamal made his competitive return late in the match and had just enough time to cause major problems for the opposing defense.
Lamine Yamal was able to play about 20 minutes in La Roja’s World Cup opener.
As for Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Al Owais stood out following the 1-1 draw against Uruguay. Al-Ula’s goalkeeper seemed impenetrable for much of the match. He was, however, able to count on the support of excellent defenders in front of him. The only player on the roster not playing in his home country, Saud Abdulhamid, the RC Lens fullback, was very impressive on his wing.
The same can be said for Abdulelah Al Amri in the center of the defense. In fact, it was the Al-Nassr defender who managed to break the deadlock in this match. In midfield, Mohamed Kanno, the Al-Hilal midfielder, put on a great performance. He expects to continue in the same vein against Spain. For their part, Firas Al Buraikan and Musab Al Juwayr didn’t have much to work with on offense. They may not have many opportunities this Sunday either.
