Having edged out their Iberian rivals late in the day during the Round-of-16, the Spanish will continue their assault on the 2026 World Cup on Friday, when they’ll take on Belgium in California.
As time ticked away against Portugal, it looked as if the current European champions would be facing extra time, but they avoided that stress thanks to a timely finish from Mikel Merino, who latched onto a deft Ferran Torres pass, before slotting home inside injury time. Off the back of that effort, and off the back of another clean sheet, the Spaniards will surely fancy themselves to progress.
The Belgians will also be feeling confident in California having torn apart the last remaining host nation during the Round-of-16. Rudi Garcia’s men needed to improve and they did, especially offensively, so we shouldn’t be too surprised if they become the first team to reach the Spanish. ‘Belgium to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ stands out as a viable option in the early betting.

Spain - Belgium: Form Analysis
As much as it’s often good to highlight some of the negatives, it really is difficult to criticize the Spanish at this stage of the tournament. Sure, they’ve benefitted from a few of their opponents bottling it, but they’ve done everything that’s been asked of them with aplomb, scoring goals, keeping clean sheets and ultimately reaching the quarter-finals without getting close to hitting top gear. It will now be interesting to see how much they can improve as the tournament gets really serious.
However, they burst into life during the Round-of-16, not just beating the Stars and Stripes but totally putting them in their place. That performance was needed ahead of this sizable task.
This World Cup has been something of a slow burner for the Belgians, who were ponderous during the group stages, tying with both Egypt and Iran in displeasing fashion, while they didn’t exactly create a positive impression when just about beating the Senegalese in the Round-of-32. However, they burst into life during the Round-of-16, not just beating the Stars and Stripes but totally putting them in their place. That performance was needed ahead of this sizable task.

Spain & Belgium Squad Analysis
It would be a surprise if Luis de la Fuente made many changes ahead of this quarter-final clash. Then again, Ferran Torres made a game-winning contribution after coming on for a substitute against Portugal, as did Mikel Merino, so those two are likely at the front of the queue if anybody is going to be replaced.
Unfortunately, Amadou Onana was forced off with what looked like a sizable knee injury during the Round-of-16, so he is unlikely to feature here.
The Belgians made several changes after that disappointing effort against Senegal, with Nicolas Raskin and Dodi Lukebakio coming into the starting XI against USA. Both players made decent contributions and should remain in the team. Unfortunately, Amadou Onana was forced off with what looked like a sizable knee injury during the Round-of-16, so he is unlikely to feature here.

Our Spain vs Belgium Prediction
It is indeed a fact that the Spanish have not conceded at this tournament, but let’s be honest, have they really been tested? Offensively, none of their three group opponents turned up, while both the Austrians and the Portuguese created very little in those first two knockout matches. This could be a different test for La Roja, who are there to be got at on the break.
The Belgians are coming off the back of a very strong offensive effort, while they’re more than capable of hurting teams that play with a high line, so despite Spain’s clearly impressive defensive record, odds of +275 are worth taking.
Our Spain vs Belgium Pick: Belgium to Score Over 1.5 Goals.

Tie
If you’re looking to bet on the result of this game, then you should consider opting for the draw. Sure, the Spanish have created a better overall impression than the Belgians, but at times, they have looked weak at guarding against the break, so we should not write the Red Devils off here, while let’s face it, until that late goal, which came out of nowhere, Luis de la Fuente’s men seemed quite happy to tie with a Portuguese team that probably isn’t much stronger than this Belgian outfit.
