The European champions will begin their assault on the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday, when Spain and Austria clash in California.
Despite getting off to a dodgy start, tying 0-0 against Cape Verde, the Spanish made light work of topping their group, and now they’ll look to shift through the gears and lay down a marker ahead of the Round-of-16. The Austrians didn’t make much of a statement during the group stages, keeping zero clean sheets, winning only one game, but thanks to the expanded format, here they are. They’ll need to improve.
Based on the early lines, combining the Spain win with ‘Both Teams to Score’ offers some value for money. Sure, La Roja have not conceded at this tournament yet, but the Austrians are at their best on the break in games of this nature, so while their overall efforts suggest that they’ll come unstuck, they can make their offensive presence felt in the process.

Spain - Austria: Form Analysis
It was easy to be critical of the Spanish after that shock tie against minnows Cape Verde, and let’s face it, they were wasteful in the final third, but Luis de la Fuente’s men were never going to come up short given the new format, and in the end, they made light work of topping the group with seven points. Having scored five goals in their last two games, the European champions will absolutely fancy themselves to get the better of an Austrian team that has struggled defensively at this tournament.

During the first round of group games, the Austrians flexed their offensive muscles, scoring three goals, but they were up against inferior opposition. Second time out, they had a wake-up call against the Argentines, who defeated Ralf Rangnick’s men without ever really getting out of second gear. That defeat sparked an improved offensive effort against the Algerians, but yet again, they looked weak at the back, which does bode well ahead of a game against one of the best teams on the planet.

Spain & Austria Squad Analysis
Luis de la Fuente is unlikely to change a great deal following two solid wins from his team. Alex Baena justified his inclusion with a goal last time out, so we should see the Atletico Madrid man start this game on the left. On the opposite flank, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will continue to be the key man.

The Austrians enjoyed themselves offensively last time out, and that was in no small part down to the inclusion of veteran Marko Arnautovic, whose experience will likely prove invaluable here. Forward Michael Gregoritsch came on to good effect, providing an assist, against Algeria and could return to the starting XI here.

Our Spain vs Austria Prediction
Given that the Spanish have kept a clean sheet in each of their three games at the 2026 World Cup, you may assume that they’ll shut out the Austrians. However, the men coached by Ralf Rangnick scored three goals last time out, boosting their offensive confidence, while their best performances over the last couple of years have typically come in games where they can hit high-pressing teams on the break.
Betting on the Spanish to win without keeping a clean sheet is thus an eye-catching move, especially at odds of +255.

Spain vs Austria - Other Interesting Picks
Spain to Win
Value may not be your thing, and if you are bothered about getting value for money and are merely concerned with sticking a likely winning selection into your parlay, then take the Spaniards to get the job done. They have much more all-round quality to call upon, and when push comes to shove, the Austrians won’t be able to match La Roja.
