No. 4 Tennessee (24-6, 11-6) will try to close out the regular season with a win when the Volunteers host the South Carolina Gamecocks at the Food City Center in Knoxville, TN. Gametime for this SEC battle is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET with coverage on the SEC Network.
South Carolina looked like it would be a competitive team following a 10-3 start to the season. But that was against a soft non-conference schedule. Once it came time for SEC play to get underway, reality set in. They lost their first 13 conference games before pulling out a win vs. Texas a couple of weeks ago. After getting a second win (vs. Arkansas), they closed the home part of their schedule with a loss to Georgia, 73-64. The Vols are coming off a surprising loss to Ole Miss in their road finale on Wednesday, 78-76. So, they will probably want to make a statement and end the season with a win against a beatable South Carolina team. Chaz Lanier is one of four Tennessee starters that has averaged in double digits this season (17.7 ppg), followed by Zakai Zeigler (13.5 ppg), Jordan Gainey (11 ppg), and Igor Milicic Jr. (10.1 ppg).

Tennessee will win this game; that much is not in question. But can they cover a 15.5-point spread? That’s a tougher question to answer. The Vols have a top-ten defense that will clamp down hard on South Carolina’s dismal offense; I’d be surprised if the Gamecocks score 60. Tennessee’s offense is good (74.5 ppg this season), but the Gamecocks defense is not terrible (71.3 ppg allowed). However, with the TOTAL set at 128.5, I’m more confident in the Vols winning by 16+ points than I am in the final score being over or under 128.5 points.
