by Lou Aguila in ATP Italian Open Picks
World’s No.1 Jannik Sinner returns to action on Saturday as he aims to recapture his dominant form against Mariano Navone of Argentina in the second round of the 2025 Rome Masters.
Sinner will be playing his first match since capturing the Australian Open in January. The Italian served a 3-month ban for breaching the doping protocol by WADA. Now that he’s back on the tour, Sinner is expected to contend for a title right away despite not playing a single competitive match in weeks.
Navone hopes to build on his quarterfinal finish at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger. The Argentine hurdles his first-round opponent in Rome, beating teenager Federico Cina 6-3 6-3. Navone is 15-14 in the season and 12-8 on clay in 2025.

Our Jannik Sinner vs Mariano Navone Prediction
Fearless Forecast: Jannik Sinner overcomes shaky start to escape Mariano Navone’s upset bid.
I feel Mariano Navone has a glimmer of a chance to upset Jannik Sinner, who hasn’t played competitive tennis again in months. I assume Sinner has spent most of the three months staying in shape, but being away from the tour for so long should take away some of Sinner's competitive fire that is prevalent during his dominant run at the Australian Open. I am not saying Sinner will be upset on Saturday. However, I expect Navone, who has a 65 percent win rate on clay, to make the world’s No.1 feel uncomfortable, and at times, vulnerable.
