The courts at the WTA event in Wuhan, also known as the Wuhan Open, will welcome a home-country player on Wednesday, as Shuai Zhang of China takes on Sorana Cirstea of Romania, not for the first time. Back in 2022, the pair met on a hard surface, and it was Zhang who came out on top, winning in straight sets. Things have changed since then, but the Chinese player has been playing well recently, so she ought to believe that she can beat her higher-ranked opponent.
Sorana Cirstea has been in and out of form on a hard surface of late, losing three of her last six, while she didn't need to be at her best against the retiring Jelena Ostapenko last time out. That match may not have prepared her fully for what should be a tough test against an in-form competitor, who will likely have most of the crowd support.
