Seattle Sounders FC and Club Santos Laguna meet on Sunday in a Leagues Cup match at Lumen Field. The Sounders are coming off a record-setting performance in their first game of the tournament. Seattle demolished Cruz Azul 7-0 on Thursday, the largest margin of victory in Leagues Cup history. That dominant win underlined Seattle’s excellent form of late.
The club has been near the top of the MLS Western Conference this season, and they recently held their own against elite international competition in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. Head coach Brian Schmetzer’s team appears fully motivated to add Leagues Cup silverware to their honors. With three points already secured, Seattle can take a big step toward the quarterfinals if they defeat Santos Laguna.
Santos Laguna will try to regroup after a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids in their opening match. The Mexican side took the lead in that game through a spectacular goal by winger Jordan Carrillo, but they were unable to hold the advantage and conceded twice in the second half.
To make matters worse, Santos had starting goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo sent off in stoppage time, meaning he will be suspended for this match. Santos Laguna have a proud history with five Liga MX titles, but consistency has eluded them recently – they exited in the Round of 32 in last year’s Leagues Cup and finished in mid-table in the last Liga MX season.
New manager Francisco Rodríguez (appointed in May 2025) will need to rally his squad for a tough test in Seattle to keep their hopes alive.

Our Seattle Sounders vs Club Santos Laguna Prediction
The Sounders will look to their numerous in-form players to continue delivering results. Forward Jesús Ferreira made waves on his Seattle debut with a goal in the thrashing of Cruz Azul, adding yet another menacing dimension to an already potent attacking group featuring Jordan Morris and summer signee Pedro de la Vega.
Replacing De la Vega, he netted twice against Cruz Azul, once on a highlight-reel volley, and is likely next in line for playing time. In midfield, Danny Leyva and João Paulo anchor things and hold up for the forwards, with center back Yeimar spearheading the back line that hasn't yet allowed a goal in the tournament.
For Santos Laguna, losing Acevedo in net puts immediate pressure on replacement stopper Gibrán Lajud. On the offensive, 22-year-old Jordan Carrillo is the hope with play-making and finishing talent on the left wing. Scoring presence offensively will be asked of forward Harold Preciado, while hold-over midfielder Fernando Gorriarán (assuming he is healthy) can provide punch with box-to-box talent.
The Sounders' home confidence and firepower render them solid favorites heading into this encounter. Santos Laguna will fight hard, but the Sounders possess the depth and form to record yet another victory. Our prediction for Seattle Sounders vs. Club Santos Laguna: Sounders to win.
