The Seattle Reign and the Kansas City Current enter Wednesday night's clash at ONE Spokane Stadium with strikingly similar early-season records, yet their respective paths to 1-1-0 tell very different stories. Seattle opened the 2026 NWSL campaign on the road with a gritty 2-1 win over the Orlando Pride on March 15, with goals from Jess Fishlock and Brittany Ratcliffe carrying the Reign to victory despite battling a two-hour lightning delay at halftime.
That encouraging start was quickly tempered, however, as Seattle fell 2-0 to Portland Thorns in the Cascadia Derby last Friday, conceding twice in the first half despite Portland playing with ten and then nine players — a result that raised real questions about the Reign's defensive resolve.
Kansas City, meanwhile, launched their title defense with a statement come-from-behind 2-1 win at home over Utah Royals, with Croix Bethune and Ally Sentnor netting second-half goals, before the Shield holders were themselves humbled on the road, falling 2-1 to the Chicago Stars on Sunday in Evanston as the team dropped its first road contest of 2026. Two teams, two wins and two losses apiece, but neither side will want to fall further off the pace this early in the season.

Our Seattle Reign vs Kansas City Current Prediction
Fishlock remains the engine of everything Seattle does going forward. The Welsh midfielder netted her 49th career NWSL goal in the opener, tying Christen Press for the ninth-most goals in league history, and her reading of the game at 39 years old continues to defy belief. Alongside her, Nerilia Mondesir has been a revelation, recording two assists in the season opener — her first in the NWSL — and establishing herself as a genuine attacking threat.
For Kansas City, substitute Haley Hopkins has made an impact in back-to-back matches, scoring against Chicago after replacing Michelle Cooper at halftime, while Croix Bethune has shown why the Current made her acquisition such a priority this offseason. The injury picture, though, is a significant concern for head coach Chris Armas: Temwa Chawinga, Michelle Cooper, Alana Cook, and Clare Gagne are all on the season-ending injury list, while Mary Long remains on the 45-day injury list — a brutal toll on a squad that set NWSL records just one season ago.
That injury depth chart gives Seattle a meaningful edge heading into this matchup. The Reign are at home, carry fresh legs relative to Kansas City's taxing early road schedule, and have the creativity of Mondesir and Fishlock to exploit a Current backline missing one of its best defenders in Cook. Kansas City has the pedigree and the midfield quality to push back, but they have now allowed three goals across just two matches after being nearly impenetrable in 2025, meaning neither side can feel comfortable. Still, the weight of Kansas City's absences and the difficulty of a third straight road match tips the scales toward Seattle. Our prediction for Seattle Reign vs. Kansas City Current: Over 2.5 goals.
