Two sides rapidly moving in opposite directions go head to head at PayPal Park on Wednesday evening as the fast-starting San Jose Earthquakes take on an Austin FC side that has gone seven games without a win.
The Earthquakes have won seven of their eight MLS fixtures so far this season, and come into Wednesday's game off the back of a resounding 1-4 road win against a very strong LAFC side. A strong defence has been the basis of San Jose's early-season success; their record of just three goals conceded in eight games is the joint best in the Eastern Conference.
Austin's thrilling 3-3 draw with Toronto at the weekend means that Nico Estévez's side have won just one of their opening eight MLS fixtures this season. The one source of comfort for Estévez will be that his team have been competitive in the majority of their games; three of their four defeats have been by just a single goal.
