The San Diego Padres will face the San Francisco Giants in the third game of a four-game series tonight at Petco Park. First Pitch for this NL West showdown is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. EST.
Last night’s 5-1 win over the visiting Giants gave the Padres win No. 70 of the season, but more importantly, it stopped a four-game losing skid. So, of course, a win tonight will bring them a step closer to starting a new win streak (they had won five in a row before getting swept by the Dodgers in LA over the weekend). JP Sears is scheduled to start for the home team. Sears has a 7-10 record in 23 starts with a 5.12 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and .267 OBA. He’s gone 3-5 in 10 home starts with an ERA of 5.48 and a .273 OBA. He’s started just one game since the Padres acquired him, and it didn’t go well (@ Arizona, Aug. 4). He lasted five innings, giving up ten hits (one home run), five earned runs, and a walk while striking out five. As for the Giants, Landen Roupp is set to start. The young righty is 7-6 in 21 starts with a 3.45 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and .263 OBA.

Neither starter is super impressive. But it may not matter, given how both teams have been hitting the ball of late. Over the last week, the Padres have been hitting .219; the Giants, .231. Sears has not been good for the Padres, nor was he strong for the A’s before the trade. But, luckily, the Padres have the best bullpen in baseball. If the Giants start to rough him up a little, they’ll pull him and let the pen do the heavy lifting. Because of that, I’m leaning towards taking the Padres to win.
