As the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets wrap up their three-game set on Sunday afternoon, both teams are seeking some measure of consistency amidst recent turbulence. The series is tied 1-1, with San Francisco taking game one by a narrow 4-3 score, and New York exploding in game two with a 12-6 rout. The rubber match not only decides the series but may also mark a turning point for two clubs heading in very different directions in their respective divisions.
The Giants enter Sunday’s contest with a 55-56 record, having fallen below .500 during a rough stretch in late July and early August. Their game two loss was emblematic of their recent struggles: after clawing back from an early deficit to lead 4-3, San Francisco surrendered nine unanswered runs to the Mets and never recovered. That kind of collapse has become all too common lately.
The Giants have now dropped seven of their last eight games and were recently swept by both the Pittsburgh Pirates and these same Mets just last week. Despite those setbacks, they remain in third place in the NL West—but barely, and their margin for error is shrinking fast.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 63-48 and currently lead the NL East, though not without some recent stumbles of their own. New York entered this series after being swept by the Padres and had lost four of its last five. However, their explosive offensive performance on Saturday, highlighted by a 12-run barrage, was a reminder of how dangerous they can be when clicking.
The Mets’ ability to hit the long ball is a key separator in this matchup. With 137 home runs on the year, they’re tied for 10th in the majors, while the Giants sit near the bottom at 103, tied for 26th alongside the White Sox.

Our San Francisco Giants vs New York Mets Prediction
On the mound, the Giants turn to rookie Carson Whisenhunt for just his second career start. The 23-year-old right-hander had a rocky MLB debut against Pittsburgh, allowing four earned runs over five innings. While he managed to escape with a no-decision, his minor league numbers—specifically a 4.42 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across nearly 100 innings—don’t exactly inspire confidence. Given the pressure of facing a top-tier NL lineup like the Mets on the road, Whisenhunt has a tall task ahead.
Opposing him is Frankie Montas, who hasn’t quite found his rhythm either. The veteran right-hander owns a 5.46 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP in limited action this season, having only made six starts due to injury. Most recently, Montas gave up five runs in 4.1 innings against San Diego. While his results have been inconsistent, Montas at least brings veteran experience and some past success, and the Mets’ bats have often provided enough run support to overcome his struggles—evidenced by his 3-1 record despite the inflated ERA.
Ultimately, this game looks like it comes down to offensive firepower and experience on the mound. The Giants, in the middle of a brutal slump, are struggling to generate consistent offense, especially in the home run department. They're also handing the ball to a rookie pitcher who’s still finding his footing in the majors. The Mets, on the other hand, may not have the most reliable starter in Montas, but their lineup is more than capable of bailing him out, as they did in game two.
With New York’s offense heating back up and San Francisco reeling, the edge goes to the Mets. Expect them to pressure Whisenhunt early, capitalize on any command issues, and rely on their bullpen to lock things down if Montas runs into trouble. A series win at home would give the Mets a confidence boost after a tough series against San Diego and solidify their place atop the division. Our prediction for NY Mets vs. San Francisco Giants: Mets to win.
