The New Orleans Saints host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, following the Saints' loss in their season-opening match 20–13. The loss was bitter as the defense did everything asked of them. They held their opposition below 300 yards of offense, forced the opposition to punt, and made life difficult for them.

The offense negated much of this good work. Penalties were the biggest culprit here, taking away promising drives and leaving the Saints in long-yardage situations in which they were unable to convert. It was not a one-time occurrence either, for this is a repeat of the manner in which they vexed themselves in the prior season. The confidence is hence precarious at best and unless the offense becomes more solid, this defense is going to keep putting the team under pressure.

The 49ers opened the season with a tough 17–13 victory. The defense bailed them in the closing moments for a third straight week, this time in the form of a clutch turnover. The ability to come through in the moments that constitute a team's season is the defining characteristic in San Francisco football.

But not everything is going perfectly. Injuries have already upheaved the team at quarterback and tight end and potentially might force in-game adjustments in planning. The roster is rich in depth and the Niners possess more firepower than they possess roster space. The team culture also enshrines a next-man-up mentality of business beyond the slogan.
