Winning series against the Marlins, Pirates, and, before that, the Braves was how the Padres broke out of their mid-May slump, their weakest point of the season. However, they've made up for lost ground, and what began early as a battle between the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants for the NL West continues to be that way at the start of June.

Before Tuesday's game, the Padres and Giants are only separated by the two-game lead San Diego earned by winning the first game of the series in San Francisco Bay, 1-0, in a game where the Giants squandered an excellent outing from Webb, who pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out seven. Kolek, for the Padres, also had a good day, and San Diego won thanks to Jose Iglesias' sacrifice fly.

Game 2 started off by maintaining the low-scoring tone of Game 1 until Heliot Ramos hit his 11th HR of the season, scoring the Giants' first run in the final 13 innings before that blast.

Pivetta, with a 6-2 record for the Padres, and Harrison with a 0.91 WHIP in 14.1 IP, were scheduled to be the pitching duel of Game 3.
