The Padres are coming off a painful series loss in Cincinnati, where they were swatted away by the Reds in Game 3. But now their difficult road trip continues, and they were unable to win the series opener against the Phillies.
With odds as low as -225, the Phillies started as favorites to win the series opener against the Padres, and it couldn't be any different with Wheeler pitching. Zack pitched an absolute gem of eight complete innings, striking out 10 and not issuing a single walk. There was no way Waldron, starting the game for the Padres in that uneven pitching duel, could face Wheeler with six walks. With more than 40,000 fans in attendance on Monday, the Phillies only allowed six hits, but at times clutch to win the opener, with Castellanos hitting his 10th home run of the season.
At least the Game 2 pitching duel between Pivetta for the Padres and Sanchez promises greater parity. Pivetta has an 8-2 record in 90-plus innings pitched, and Sanchez has a 2.79 ERA in 90-plus innings in 2025.
