More than 40,000 people turned out to watch the Padres-Mets game on Tuesday, a game New York won 8-3. On Wednesday, betting odds are on NYM-SD as the closest game, with San Diego's Pivetta, with a 13-5 record, facing Mets left-hander David Peterson, with a 9-5 record.
At midseason, when the Mets were leading their division, it was unimaginable that the Mets would be barely holding on to the last NL wild card spot today, being chased in the standings by the D-backs, who are just 1.5 games behind. Fortunately for Carlos Mendoza's team, the Mets have six games remaining, three of which will be against the Nats and the last three against the Marlins to close out the season, teams with a losing record.
September saw the worst stretch for the 2025 Mets, who lost eight in a row against the Reds, Phillies, and Rangers, primarily due to a starting pitching staff that lost the shine it had at the start of the season. However, the Mets reacted in time, thanks in part to Pete Alonso. He hit one home run to leave the Rangers on the field in the final game of the series. He also hit one of the four home runs the Mets hit in the first game of the series against the Padres.

He has had solid numbers this season, posting a 13-5 record in 171.1 innings pitched, with a low ERA and WHIP of 2.73 and 0.95, and averaging more than one strikeout per inning. Pivetta pitched a gem in his last start against the Reds, but received no offensive support.
