The Minnesota Twins will host the San Diego Padres in a three-game series at Target Field in Minneapolis this weekend. Game One is scheduled for tonight at 8:10 p.m. EST.
San Diego will look to turn things around after losing three of their last four, including two in Seattle. At 75-59, they are in comfortable control of one of three NL wildcard slots, but there is a lot of baseball left to be played. As for the Twins, this is their first game at home after a 2-4 road trip. Nestor Cortes is scheduled to start for the Padres. Cortes has a 2-2 record in six starts with a 4.66 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and .224 OBA. However, he has struggled on the road, where he is 0-1 in three starts with an 8.74 ERA and .326 OBA. But since being acquired by San Diego, he is 1-1 in four starts with a 3.0 ERA. He one-hit the Dodgers his last time out (Aug. 23). As for the Twins, Zebby Mathews is scheduled to start. He has gone 3-4 this season in 11 starts with a 5.30 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and .288 OBA. But he has been better at home, where he is 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA and .270 OBA.

The numbers for Nestor Cortes paint an unimpressive picture of him, primarily because he got thrashed by the Yankees in his first outing of the year (March 29), giving up six hits (five home runs) and eight runs in two innings of work. He looked good in his only other appearance before the trade (April 3 vs. Cincinnati) and has done a good job for the Padres. It would be nice to get a little more help from the lineup today (.232 BA over the last week). But facing Mathews may be just what the San Diego lineup needs.
