In the MLS Round of 16, San Diego displayed more of the same quality they showed throughout the regular season, in which they finished first in the Western Conference: highly refined football that allowed them to eliminate the Portland Timbers.
In Game 1 of the series, San Diego won 2-1 with first-half goals from Valakari and Dreyer. Game 2 moved to Jeld-Wen Field, and a late goal from Guerra forced a penalty shootout. San Diego missed three penalties, forcing a third game. There, playing at home, San Diego finally sealed the series, winning 4-0 in their fourth consecutive match against the Timbers. Dreyer and Pellegrino again scored early goals, and both added another in the second half. The newest franchise in MLS now faces exciting matches against Minnesota United in the quarterfinals.
The Loons are confident as they prepare for their quarterfinal match on Monday. Minnesota United did what was necessary to defeat the Seattle Sounders; they won Game 1 on penalties after a scoreless draw; they were thrashed 2-4 at Lumen Field, and in the return leg at Allianz Field, they drew 3-3 and won on penalties.

San Diego FC - Minnesota United: Form Analysis
Minnesota United's last playoff run will go down as an MLS classic, as they reached the quarterfinals in improbable and epic fashion. First, they fell behind 0-2 in the decisive match as early as the 8th minute when Seattle capitalized on some silly defensive errors. Seattle continued to hammer the Loons' goal, but with a brilliant free kick, Pereyra narrowed the gap.
Then, the game took a dramatic turn when an injury to Rosales left Minnesota with 10 men, increasing Seattle's chances of advancing to over 90%. Minnesota United miraculously avoided conceding Seattle's third goal, tied the game with 10 men thanks to a two-header in the box, and then inexplicably took the lead from a corner kick. The 3-3 equalizer that forced penalties also came from a Seattle corner, but Minnesota emerged victorious from the 20-penalty shootout.

San Diego FC & Minnesota United Squad Analysis
Several of the key players in Minnesota's improbable qualification will start on Monday, including Joaquín Pereyra. Loons goalkeeper St. Clair will be back in goal. He's enjoying a career high, having been called up to the Canadian national team and scoring the penalty that sent Minnesota to the quarterfinals. He has also made several crucial saves throughout the game. Yeboah is expected to start for the Loons on Monday.
San Diego FC is expected to field a similar lineup to the one that performed so well all year; The Loons will have to be especially wary of Anders Dreyer, San Diego's leading scorer. Carlos Joaquim Dos Santos will be out injured, and Aiden Joshua Harangi remains doubtful.
