In the MLS Round of 16, San Diego displayed more of the same quality they showed throughout the regular season, in which they finished first in the Western Conference: highly refined football that allowed them to eliminate the Portland Timbers.

Minnesota United did what was necessary to defeat the Seattle Sounders; they won Game 1 on penalties after a scoreless draw; they were thrashed 2-4 at Lumen Field, and in the return leg at Allianz Field, they drew 3-3 and won on penalties.
