Playing without Victor Wembanyama in Game 3, the San Antonio Spurs get an opportunity to showcase their depth and defense against the increasingly confident Portland Trail Blazers.
Momentum: The San Antonio Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers split the first two games of the series, which further amplifies the importance of Friday night’s Game 3 at Moda Center.
The Spurs took Game 1 convincingly, 111-98, behind the all-around brilliance of MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama, who debuted in the playoffs with 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
Unfortunately, disaster struck for San Antonio in Game 2 as Wembanyama exited early because of a concussion. Scott Henderson, the No.2 overall pick behind Wembanyama in the draft three years ago, owned the spotlight as he finished with 31 points on 11 for 17 shooting.
Hot on the Board: the Spurs are still the betting favorite at -140 despite not having a concussed Victor Wembanyama around for at least two more games and playing on the road. Without Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs bank on their depth to grind out a tough win on the road in Game 3.
If you were keeping tabs with the Spurs throughout the season, you would know that they are more than just a Wembanyama one-man show. Even when Wemby was out for several weeks early this year, the team managed to compile a winning record and maintain its position in the brutal West Conference. As a matter of fact, the Spurs won 2 out of 3 regular-season meetings without the Blazers without Wembanyama.
De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle understand that they will now put up bigger numbers on offense to fill the void left by Wemby. The Spurs can also count on rookie Dylan Harper and the newly minted Sixth Man of the Year, Keldon Johnson, to contribute quality minutes off the bench.
I also expect the Spurs to employ a better game plan in slowing down Scott Henderson, who had a field day in Game 2. Luckily for the Spurs, they have a stash of athletic wingmen who can make Henderson work for his points, though Castle will likely get the assignment of guarding him for the majority of this game. Castle is a lockdown defender and someone I believe will be a perennial member of the All-Defensive teams in the coming days.
