The Sam Houston State Bearkats will try to win their first game of the season on Thursday, Oct. 2, when they head to New Mexico to take on the New Mexico State Aggies. Kickoff at Aggie Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST with the broadcast on CBSSN.

Sam Houston State was a solid 10-3 team last season. However, new head coach Phil Longo was forced to essentially rebuild the starting roster from scratch, as most of the team’s talent departed for new teams via the transfer portal. Four games in, they have looked like a rebuilding team with four straight losses to start the season. After losing 55-0 to Texas, the defense ranks as one of the worst units in the country, giving up 42.8 points per game. With an offense that barely averages 16 points per game, it will be challenging to win. As for New Mexico State, the Aggies already hit rock bottom last season when they finished a dismal 3-9. With what talent they had off to better teams via the transfer porta, they were left to mine the transfer portal to rebuild. Two weeks in, there appeared to be signs of hope as the team won twice, but then they were dominated by Louisiana Tech and couldn’t get out of their own way against New Mexico.

However, while 2-2 is not an ideal record, it’s better than Sam Houston State’s winless mark (0-4).
