The Portland Timbers face a must-win contest against St Louis City on Wednesday night, as they attempt to make a late surge for an MLS Western Conference wild card spot.
With three regular season games remaining, the Timbers are currently four points outside of the postseason positions. A run of seven games without a win had appeared to spell the end of Portland's playoff hopes; however, a dramatic 3-2 win over Charlotte at the weekend (sealed thanks to a 96th minute Alexander Aravena winner) has given them fresh belief as we enter the final two weeks of the campaign.
St Louis are already assured of their playoff spot, but their recent form is doing little to suggest that they have a chance of success in the MLS Cup. The 3-0 loss at Real Salt Lake on Sunday means that Yoann Damet's side have now picked up one point from their last three MLS games.
