Holger Rune of Denmark is set to face Russian vet Roman Safiullin in the second round on Saturday, seeking to open his Cincinnati Open campaign on a strong note following a fourth-round flameout in Toronto.
Rune begins a fresh campaign in Cincinnati, just days after falling short of a quarterfinal finish at the Canadian Open. Denmark’s No.1 men’s singles player posted back-to-back wins over French foes (Alexandre Muller and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard) before he ran out of steam in his three-set duel with 2024 Canadian Open champion, Alexei Popyrin, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 in the round of 16.
Safiullin secured his slot in the next round after pouncing on an out-of-form Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-2, 6-3. Safiullin, who earned a win over Ugo Blanchet of France 4-6 6-2 7-6(9) before losing to Casper Ruud 3-6, 3-6 at the Canadian Open, captured 86 percent of his first serves and 67 percent of his second to win all his serves against Tabilo. He also broke the Chilean three times on 10 return points.
