Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain will take on two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud in the second round of the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.
Bautista Agut reached the second round of competition in Monaco with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brandon Nakashima of the United States. The Spaniard dominated the service battles, holding 97 percent of his serves and collecting 31 points off his first serves. Bautista Agut also broke four times, winning 19 return points.
Ruud will be playing his first clay court match this year on Wednesday. Ruud is one of the best clay court players in recent years, boasting a 242-109 record or 68.9 percent win rate on the surface. The Norwegian hopes to win his first ATP 1000 title in Monte Carlo this year after losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in last year’s final, 1–6, 4–6.

Ruud has been so great on the surface that he has never posted less than 20 wins on clay in the last four years. The last time Ruud failed to rack up at least 20 wins on clay was in 2020, at the height of the COVID pandemic, where he registered a still impressive 17-9 record. Bautista Agut is no pushover. He’s a legit campaigner on the ATP Tour and has gone through a lot of battles through the years. But I am sure he knows that taking on Ruud on a clay court is a lot harder than on any other surface. Bautista Agut would have to deliver a performance 5x better than he did against Nakashima to get close to beating Ruud in this match.
