We have an All-American battle in the first round of the Japan Open as Ben Shelton takes on Reilly Opelka on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. The 21-year-old Shelton looks to build on his impressive stint at the 2024 Laver Cup, which saw him beating former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev 6-7(6) 7-5 10-7 and engaging in a back-and-forth battle before gallantly falling to Carlos Alcaraz 6-4 6-4. The American is drawn in the top half of the bracket, setting the stage for a collision course with Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. Opelka won his two Davis Cup men’s singles matches, downing Christian Garin of Chile 6-3 4-6 7-6(3) and Henri Squire of Germany 6-7(4) 7-6(9) 6-3 to help the Americans advance to the next round of the competition. Unfortunately, Opelka lost in the first qualifying match against Denis Yevseyev 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3 at the 2024 Hangzhou Open.
