After a disappointing first-round exit in Madrid, McCarthy Kessler of the United States hopes for better results in Rome as she kicks off her Italian Open campaign Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia on Tuesday.
Kessler will try to erase the memory of a first-round loss to Bianca Andreescu of Canada 2-6, 4-6 in the first round of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open by making a deep run in the final big clay-court tournament before the French Open. But first, Kessler needs to overcome Sramkova, who ranks No.36 in the WTA world rankings.
Sramkova also failed to advance past the opening round at Madrid after falling to Maria Lourdes Carlie of Argentina 3-6, 2-6. It has been a challenging year for Sramkova, who has started her 2025 campaign with an 8-12 record. Despite the poor record and the first-round loss to Carlie, Sramkova can still salvage his season by starting to get good results in clay-court tournaments ahead of the French Open. Sramkova is traditionally strong on the red dirt, carrying a decent 64 percent win rate on the surface.
