Nations League champions will be confident of continuing their march towards next year's World Cup, when they host beleaguered Ireland in Lisbon on Saturday.
After starting their qualification campaign with a 5-0 thumping of Armenia, Roberto Martinez's men had to dig seriously deep to overcome Hungary 3-2 in their second game, thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and a late winner from full back Joao Cancelo.
In contrast to Portugal, Ireland have had a dismal time of it in their opening two qualification games. On the face of it, a 2-2 draw at home to Hungary seems like a decent result, but given the fact that the Hungarians played the final 40 minutes with ten men, it was very much a case of two dropped points for Heimir Hallgrímsson's side.
Ireland followed that up with an embarrassing 2-1 loss to Armenia, a result that many pundits called the worst in the nation's footballing history. Unless he can turn things around extremely quickly, Hallgrímsson's days as Ireland head coach look to be numbered.

Our Portugal vs Ireland Prediction
These are desperate times for Ireland, and we think Portugal will pile even more pressure on Heimir Hallgrímsson this weekend by handing his side a huge defeat.
Roberto Martinez's side are jam packed with world class attackers, including the likes of Pedro Neto, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo. In contrast, the Ireland squad looks painfully short of quality and will be devoid of any confidence after last month's defeat in Armenia.
That all points towards a big home victory, so our prediction for Portugal vs Republic of Ireland is: Portugal (-3) to win.
