This is the final must-win matchup in the battle to avoid relegation from League A of the UEFA Women’s Nations League. Portugal started strong in Group 3, picking up 4 points from its first two games, including a hard-fought 1–1 draw against England. But things have gone downhill since. Francisco Neto’s squad has lost three straight, including heavy defeats to Spain (7-1) and England (6-0). Still, Portugal sits in third place, a spot that would at least send them into a relegation playoff to stay in League A.
On Tuesday, they’ll host Belgium at Estádio do Marítimo in Funchal in a high-stakes clash.
Belgium, meanwhile, is at the bottom of Group 3. If the Red Flames can’t climb out of last place, they’ll drop straight down to League B. Aside from a surprise 3-2 win over England, Belgium has lost all four of its other group-stage matches. They also fell at home to Portugal earlier this year, a 1-0 defeat on February 26. That’s hardly ideal heading into a must-win road game. With everything on the line, Belgium has no choice but to win, but that task looks daunting.
