The O's swept the Pirates at Camden Yards, failing to generate any offense to back up their strong starting pitchers. Pittsburgh lost all three of their previous series by one run each, 2-3, 1-2, and 2-3 in Thursday's finale. They now face a three-game series against the Nationals at PNC Park. The Pirates lost their last six games, losing the momentum from a promising start to September in which they swept the Dodgers in a series upset.
For their part, the Nats had a four-game winning streak in September, reaching 60 wins this season, but lost the final two of their series in Miami against the Marlins.
The Nats hit especially hard in Games 1 and 2 of that series in Miami; In particular, they won Game 1 15-7 with a night of two monstrous home runs by Josh Bell and Luis Garcia's 13th home run of the season. But in Thursday's game, they were shut out by Miami, with no Nats collecting two or more hits in that game.
