It's been a bitter season for the Cardinals, who, in fact, don't particularly stand out in any category in the team's collective stats. Young players have arrived and left without leaving a significant impact. Injuries to Arenado and Donovan seem to have doomed the remainder of the season for St. Louis. While other MLB teams fill their stadiums daily, the Cards face low attendance problems for the first time, with their loyal fans disenchanted.

At Busch Stadium, on Wednesday, the Cardinals lost again to the last-place Pirates in their division, in a game where St. Louis only managed four hits and Pittsburgh won by hitting three. Tommy Pham played the hero. The Cards lost that game as -175 favorites; they had also lost to the Pirates 3-8 on Tuesday.

For the Cardinals, Wilson Contreras did play on Wednesday, going 0-for-4. The Cardinals catcher had been ejected for obscene language and fined, but he appealed the decision, postponing a suspension that could be up to six games.

All in all, it's not a good season for the Cardinals, who will start veteran Miles Mikolas again on Thursday; St. Louis has lost four of the veteran's last five starts.
