Philadelphia Union take on the Chicago Fire after finishing atop the Eastern Conference last season, clinching the Supporters’ Shield with a league-record 20 wins (66 points) and a +24 goal differential. They allowed just 33 goals all season (the fewest in MLS), reflecting a stingy defense and efficient attack. Philadelphia struggled only infrequently – they suffered a 4-0 loss at Vancouver and a 2-0 loss at Charlotte on the final day – but otherwise maintained consistent form. They won a club-record 12 home games and earned home-field advantage for the playoffs.
Chicago Fire’s season was more erratic. The Fire spent much of the year around the playoff line and ultimately qualified as an Eastern Conference Wild Card. Chicago’s results swung between highs and lows: they secured draws on Decision Day (2-2 at New England, 2-2 vs Toronto) and won their Wild Card playoff match 3-1, but also suffered lopsided defeats such as the 4-0 loss at Philadelphia and a 3-0 home loss to Minnesota.
Chicago improved late at home, recording wins over teams like Columbus and St. Louis. Overall, Chicago’s late-season form showed momentum, but their season-long inconsistencies stand in contrast to Philadelphia’s steadiness.

Our Philadelphia Union vs Chicago Fire Prediction
On Philadelphia's side, success has come from a collective effort. Fullback Kai Wagner has been a creative force on the flank, leading the team with 11 assists and consistently fueling attacks from the back. Forward Mikael Uhre also boosted the offense, contributing 6 goals and 6 assists (12 total goal contributions) and even scoring the Shield-clinching goal in early October.
On the Chicago side, striker Hugo Cuypers has shouldered much of the scoring load with roughly 19 goals, and midfielder Philip Zinckernagel has chipped in around 14 goals and numerous assists. Cuypers and Zinckernagel have been involved in a majority of Chicago's goals.
Given these forms, Philadelphia holds the edge heading into the series. The Union's balanced roster and home advantage suggest they will control much of the play and limit Chicago's opportunities. Chicago's momentum and strong forwards make the matchup competitive, but based on consistency and season-long performance, Philadelphia appears slightly more likely to advance. The series is expected to be tightly contested, but Philadelphia's superior record and defense give them a factual edge. Our prediction for Philadelphia Union vs Chicago Fire: Over 3.5 goals.
