The New Jersey Devils hope to take advantage of some tired legs in their season opener on Thursday, as they take on the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center. The Flyers wrap up a back-to-back after facing the Pittsburgh Penguins in Wednesday night's Battle of Pennsylvania.
The Devils had a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Hughes brothers both missed significant time, and the team failed to reach its full potential. However, all of their big guns are healthy for opening night and should be fired for a fresh start.
Sheldon Keefe’s team has already gained some positive momentum with a strong preseason. The team went 3-0-1 in its four exhibition games, scoring fewer than three goals only once.
The Flyers head into the new campaign after a disappointing preseason. Rick Tocchet’s side allowed five goals in three of its four outings and scored just six. After being a surprise package in 2025-26 and reaching the playoffs, the Flyers haven’t really strengthened their squad this offseason, and it will likely be tough for them to meet last year’s standards.
