Having pulled off something of a giant-killing by defeating the Germans on penalties, the Paraguayans are through to the Round-of-16, but life is about to get even tougher for the South Americans, who will take on what is arguably the best of the bunch in France.
We knew that this Paraguay team had fight and spirit in abundance, and they once again showed that they can tussle until the death during the first round of knockout games, holding the Germans to a tie, before winning on penalties. Unfortunately, they’ll need to pull out an awful lot more to get the better of a French team that brushed aside the Swedes with ease.
From a betting point of view, it could pay to take ‘France to Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ at odds of -105. We know that Les Bleus have more than enough quality to leave their opponents behind, but the South Americans won’t open up and leave much space in behind, while Didier Deschamps’ men may be looking to save themselves for tougher tasks.

When the Paraguayans struggled to keep tabs on the Stars and Stripes during the first round of group games, losing by four goals to one, they appeared to be one of the least likely Round-of-16 candidates, but thanks to a gutsy win against Turkey next time out, Gustavo Alfaro’s men turned their fortunes around, tying with the Aussies during the final round of group games to earn a place in the knockouts. And well, didn’t they prove to be a worthy knockout team by defeating the Germans.
Off the back of running riot last time out, Les Bleus should be hugely confident of making the last eight.
The French were always going to make the knockouts, let’s be honest. They did just that with ease, winning three out of three, scoring for fun in the process. A Round-of-32 match against the Swedes was never going to be a huge problem for Didier Deschamps’ men, who simply operated at a completely different level to their sorry-looking opponents. Off the back of running riot last time out, Les Bleus should be hugely confident of making the last eight.
