The Boston Celtics host the Orlando Magic this afternoon, and Boston has started around .500 with an 8-7 record. They endured a rocky opening (0-3 to start) but have since regained form. The Celtics won three straight games (beating Memphis, Los Angeles Lakers, and Brooklyn) to climb back to .500. Those wins were powered by a balanced attack; Boston has been scoring in the mid-120s in victories, highlighting their potent offense. Defensively, the Celtics have tightened up a bit in that streak, though they remain susceptible to high-scoring teams. On the other side, Orlando surprisingly stands at 9-7.
The Magic have far exceeded expectations early and are above .500 in the Southeast Division. Orlando split a recent home-and-home with Boston: they thrashed the Celtics 128-101 in Boston on Nov. 7, then Boston edged Orlando 111-107 in Orlando on Nov. 9. Orlando's strong record has come from a balanced roster. They have young stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner both scoring prolifically (each multiple games in the high 20s), and veteran Gary Harris knocking down threes off the bench. Orlando's recent form includes a four-game winning stretch (including the home win over Boston) and only a couple of narrow losses in overtime.
Orlando is playing well on both ends this month. Boston is peaking at the right time but has not been nearly as consistent. At home, however, Boston traditionally dominates, and Orlando's last win over Boston was by a large margin but in Orlando. The tables have turned since, and Boston will look to avenge that blowout loss.

In Boston's lineup, Jayson Tatum has led the way offensively; he scored 33 points in the win over the Lakers and has often exploded for 30-point games. Tatum is averaging in the high 20s per game. Jaylen Brown is another major contributor: he scored 32 points in the win at Memphis and 35 points against the Lakers. Both forward stars also contribute in rebounds and assists, but primarily shoulder the scoring load. Kristaps Porziņģis, acquired in the off-season, also had a big game (27 points) against Orlando previously and provides a scoring punch in the paint and mid-range.
The Celtics' defense is anchored by Robert Williams and Marcus Smart, who have made timely plays to spark Boston. On the Magic side, Paolo Banchero has emerged as a leader. He scored 28 and 32 points in consecutive games, doing much of Orlando's scoring through drives and jump shots. Franz Wagner is equally critical; he scored 27 points in one game and generally creates offense off the dribble or pull-up.
