by Bradley Gibbs in AFCON Picks
On Monday, it’s day three of the African Cup of Nations knockouts. At Complexe sportif de Fes, Nigeria and Mozambique will clash. Having shifted through the gears as well as anyone during the group stages, winning three out of three, scoring no shortage of goals, the Nigerians will surely fancy themselves to get the job done and progress to the quarters.
Hoping to defy the odds, the Mambas have impressed since touching down in Morocco, defeating Gabon in high-scoring style to reach the knockouts. Chiquinho Conde’s men have already made history at this tournament by recording their first ever AFCON win and reaching the knockouts for the first ever time. Can they now improve on that and reach the quarters?

Nigeria - Mozambique: Form Analysis
From a form point of view, it is very hard to criticize the Nigerians, who were arguably the best of the bunch during the group stages. Eric Chelle’s men may not look as sturdy defensively as some other teams, but they certainly pack a punch. A loaded offensive line-up has delivered the goods in style, scoring eight goals in three games, and it’s probably fair to say that when push comes to shove, the Super Eagles will fancy themselves to outscore anybody.

Winning only one of out of three games, the Mambas weren’t quite as impressive as the Nigerians during the groups, but they too created a rather positive offensive impression, scoring three goals against Gabon, before scoring (and creating chances) against Cameroon. Such efforts tell me that Conde’s men can cause problems for their opponents in Fes.

Nigeria & Mozambique Squad Analysis
The Nigerians are expected to be at full strength on Monday, with no injury concerns. In other words, Eric Chelle is free to select his preferred XI, which is expected to once again Include Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman. A strong offensive line-up indeed.
Somewhat unfortunately, Nene is likely to miss out with a knock, while Diogo Calila, who featured in all three group games, may also miss out having picked up an injury last time out.
The Nigerians aren’t the only ones with offensive strength, though. Having impressed with some stylish group-stage performances, Geny Catamo, who is fast becoming an important player for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, is expected to be the main man in attack, supported by 42-year-old veteran Domingues. Somewhat unfortunately, Nene is likely to miss out with a knock, while Diogo Calila, who featured in all three group games, may also miss out having picked up an injury last time out.

Our Nigeria vs Mozambique Prediction
Given what we saw from these two teams during the groups, I think we can expect a little more offensive action than the early odds suggest here. We know how strong the Nigerians are offensively, but most of their offensive strength came at a price defensively during the groups, so do not be surprised if a decent counter-offensive side like the Mambas cause Eric Chelle's men som problems here.
Having scored four games in their last two games against Gabon and Cameroon, Chiquinho Conde's players should fancy themselves to hurt the Super Eagles, even if they lack the defensive strength to keep things tight.
