It is one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the Champions League round of 16. The first leg of this clash between Newcastle United and FC Barcelona will be played on Tuesday at St. James' Park. Far from shining in the Premier League, the Magpies are performing much better on the European stage. They had little trouble reaching the Champions League play-offs and eliminating Qarabag FK to qualify for the round of 16 (aggregate score: 9-3). Now one of the big favorites stands in the way of Eddie Howe's team.
After reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, FC Barcelona are looking to do even better in the coming months. It secured fifth place in the league to qualify directly for the Champions League round of 16. Sitting at the top of La Liga, Hansi Flick's men are brimming with confidence as they enter the knockout stages of the Champions League. They have no intention of taking their foot off the gas on Tuesday.

Newcastle - Barcelona: Form Analysis
Newcastle United has definitely failed to shine on the national stage. Knocked out in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup, they have just been eliminated in the round of 16 of the FA Cup by Manchester City (1-3). They are also not at their best in this edition of the Premier League, sitting in 12th place in the standings.
The Magpies are much more convincing in this season's Champions League. They finished 12th in the group stage and reached the knockout rounds. In the knockout stages, Eddie Howe's team had little trouble beating Qarabag FK in the first leg (1-6) and the second leg (3-2).
During the Champions League group stage, FC Barcelona won 2-1 away at Newcastle United.
Already winners of the Spanish Super Cup earlier in the season, FC Barcelona still has big ambitions for the rest of the campaign. They have just won their last three La Liga games and are top of the table, four points ahead of Real Madrid (2nd).
In the Champions League, the Catalan club has won five of its eight group stage matches to climb to fifth place and qualify directly for the round of 16. On September 18, Hansi Flick's men had already beaten Newcastle United at St. James' Park in the group stage (1-2). Will history repeat itself on Tuesday evening?

Newcastle & Barcelona Squad Analysis
Newcastle United will have to cope with some significant absences for this Champions League round of 16 first leg. They will be without Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Lewis Miley, and, most notably, Bruno Guimaraes. To make matters worse, Tino Livramento is doubtful for this first leg.
To contain the Catalans' attacks, Malick Thiaw will have to be at his best in central defense. In the absence of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali will be eagerly awaited in midfield. On the offensive front, Anthony Gordon will be one to watch closely. He is more effective than ever in this edition of the Champions League, with 10 goals.
Lamine Yamal has been in great form with FC Barcelona in recent weeks.
As for FC Barcelona, they will have to cope with the absences of Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen, Alejandro Balde, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi. Hansi Flick can rely on an excellent goalkeeper in Joan Garcia. In front of him, Pau Cubarsi is proving solid in central defense.
In midfield, Pedri has made a remarkable comeback from injury. He is already at the top of his game. And what about the Blaugrana's attack? Lamine Yamal has been decisive in his team's last four games, while Raphinha is keen to regain his confidence for the final sprint.
