The Detroit Red Wings (37-30-8 SU, 42-33 ATS) face a must-win situation as they host the New York Rangers (51-21-4 SU, 36-40 ATS) in a potential playoff preview. The Rangers have taken both meetings this year and remain on track to claim the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. That would make them Detroit’s potential first-round opponent, if the Red Wings can hang on to their slot.
Right now, the Red Wings don’t look capable of making it back. Goaltender Alex Lyon appears to have hit a wall, as he carried a 10-game losing streak into the Red Wings’ game with Tampa Bay before finally breaking through for a victory. Even with that, Detroit has won just four times in its past 16 games and taken a mere 10 points. While the Wings have stood still, the Islanders and Penguins have caught up and made this a race.

There’s two things the Blueshirts really don’t do: turn the puck over and give up power-play opportunities. Detroit kind of needs those chances to make life difficult for New York goaltender Igor Shesterkin. Without those opportunities, the Wings have to go 5-on-5, and that’s a matchup the Rangers will win almost every time.
Detroit gives up far too many shots for a team that isn’t scoring at the moment. The Wings have hit the under in four of their past five games, and they failed to score more than two goals in three of those contests. The Rangers just don’t give up the kind of chances that the Wings need in order to make the game a battle. Throw in that Detroit’s going to be gripping the stick tighter in front of a nervous crowd, and it’s clear why our prediction for New York vs. Detroit is the Rangers to win.
