Only the combative Diamondbacks have been able to win a series against the Mets at Citi Field this season. The Mets lost two close games, 3-4 to close April and 2-4 to open May, and so far have never lost three in a row.
In Queens, teams that were hitting well were abruptly stopped by the Mets' pitching. That happened to the Cardinals, who were swept in their four-game visit to Citi Field, so they'll want to make up for that when they host the Mets in St. Louis for this weekend's series.
The Cardinals played a good doubleheader on Wednesday, but on Thursday they were unable to beat Abbott, the Reds' starter, on a three-hit afternoon against their division rival.
Clay Holmes seems more than accustomed to his role as a starter, and the Mets enjoy having him start games, as the Mets have taken the W in each of his last five starts. He collected his second of 3 W's this season in the Mets' 7-4 win over the Cards on April 20.
