One of the best rivalries in hockey will add another chapter on Thursday evening in Madison Square Garden. The New York Rangers (22-26-6) and the New York Islanders (29-19-5) will meet for the 4th time this season. The most recent meeting took place just last night, where the Islanders won 5-2. Simon Holmstrom and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each scored a goal in the win. It was the 2nd for each in their series with the Rangers this season. In the previous 2 matchups between these teams, the Islanders were able to shut out the Rangers. While losing by 3 goals is not promising, it is a step in a positive direction that the Rangers were able to put a couple in the back of the net.
The loss last night was just another in a long line of losses for the Rangers this month. They are currently just 3-9 in January and have had losing streaks of 5 and 3 during this stretch. In the 9 losses, these Rangers have allowed an average of 5.2 goals per game. With defense and netminding like that, it is obvious why their struggles have continued.
For the Islanders, things have been a bit better, but it has not been all wins this month. They are a mediocre 7-6 on the month, but are eyeing their 1st win streak if they can pick up this win over the Rangers. Ilya Sorokin is set to start in this contest after David Rittich picked up the win last night. Sorokin is coming off a shutout win over the Flyers on Monday night, where he stopped all 21 shots he faced.
The Rangers need to dig deep and try to get out of the current big brother’s shadow here. If they are going to be successful, it will likely take more than the 2 goals they have been able to muster through the 1st three meetings.

Our New York Rangers vs New York Islanders Prediction
These back-to-back matchups always have a weird flow to them. The Islanders have looked unbeatable in the previous 3 meetings with these Rangers. It is hard to imagine that will change here on Thursday night. However, that is typically when we do see something fluky. The Islanders are nearly the same price on the money line as they were last night, even after winning with relative ease. We expect the Rangers to come out strong here and surprise the Islanders and the betting public.
