In a Metropolitan Division battle, the Carolina Hurricanes attempt to break out of a slump on Thursday against the New York Islanders at the Lenovo Center.
Carolina was rolling through the first couple of weeks of the season, but the team will enter Thursday's matchup on a run of three defeats in four games. Even the lone recent winning performance came via a shootout against the Colorado Avalanche.
Rod Brind'Amour's team has struggled with injuries in defense, losing Jaccob Slavin, K'Andre Miller, and Shayne Gostisbehere. The loss of Gostisbehere has been especially significant, as he has been one of Carolina's leading scorers this season, accumulating seven points (one goal and six assists) in six games.
The Islanders have also taken a couple of injury hits, with defenseman Alexander Romanov and forward Maxim Shabanov exiting the lineup. Recently, the team had built some momentum with a four-game winning streak, but Patrick Roy's side heads to Raleigh on the back of two consecutive defeats.
Surprisingly, the Islanders have been let down by their goaltending. Ilya Sorokin has been a perennial Vezina Trophy candidate, but he's had a terrible time so far this season. In seven starts, Sorokin has posted a 2-4-1 record, while allowing 3.75 goals with a .868 save percentage.
